Skin Deep meets Julia Cheng

We talk to Julia Cheng about creating an all-female powerhouse that cultivates honest expression through dance and music.

Julia Cheng wears many hats – both literally (every time we meet she has another great piece of headwear) and metaphorically. As dancer, poet, curator and musician she created House of Absolute – an all-female powerhouse that empowers and challenges through dance and music. There is a unique energy that comes from creating a sisterhood in a non-hierarchical space where women are totally visible. We spoke to Julia about Waacking, a breathtaking form of dance that came out of the LGBTQ clubs of LA during the 70s, building a language of movement as a way of communicating ideas, difficulties and experiences with her community.
